New climate data shows global temperatures continuing to rise sharply | DW News
For the first time the world was 1.5 degrees warmer compared to pre-industrial times. It was actually anticipated that this important threshold would only be reached in the next few years or the next decade. Recently, scientists expressed "alarm" over the latest findings that the so-called AMOC, a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic, is about to shift due to rapid ice melt. If it were to fail, Europe would see a dramatic drop in temperatures of up to 10 degrees on average. In southern hemisphere countries, warming could intensify, and in the Amazon region, the rainy and dry seasons could be reversed. Sea levels would rise at a speed that would make it impossible for humans to adapt in time. Have we already exceeded the key 1.5-degree limit agreed in the Paris Climate Accord for good? ...

Panama Canal suffering major disruption | BBC News
Global shipping is severely disrupted by Houthi attacks on ships heading to the Suez Canal.
Across the Atlantic, the other canal vital to global trade is also suffering from major disruption as fewer ships are now getting through.
The El Niño weather phenomenon contributed to a severe drought, the ACP said.
It is expected to increase the cost of shipping goods around the world.
The Panama Canal greatly reduces the time and distance for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Is Climate Change Slowing Down the Ocean? | Susan Lozier | TED
Ocean waters are constantly on the move, traveling far distances in complex currents that regulate Earth's climate and weather patterns. How might climate change impact this critical system? The Government is set to triple the size of the Macquarie Island Marine Park! It's located about halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica, and it's home to about 100,000 seals and roughly 4 million penguins!
MACQUARIE ISLAND MARINE PARK
Today, the Federal Environment Minister signed off on plans to expand the park from 162,000km² to 475,000km². Which means ninety-three per cent of the park will now be completely closed to things like fishing and mining, so these animals are protected and have a safe place to breed.

Ocean waters are constantly on the move, traveling far distances in complex currents that regulate Earth's climate and weather patterns. How might climate change impact this critical system? Oceanographer Susan Lozier dives into the data, which suggests that ocean overturning may slow as our climate warms — and takes us on board the international effort to track these changes and set us on the right course while we still have time.
Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at https://countdown.ted.com/sign-up

SOCCER
First up, there's been soccer final after soccer final this weekend! Here in Australia, the Central Coast Mariners took home the A-League men's trophy after smashing Melbourne City 6-1. It's the second time the club has ever won a grand final, which was helped along by a hat-trick from Jason Cummings. Over in the UK, Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 to take out the FA Cup Final, putting them on track to take out the treble after winning the Premier League title last month and playing in the Champions League final on Saturday. Meanwhile, in the Women's Champions League, Barcelona came out on top after beating Wolfsburg 3-2!
FRENCH OPEN
Now, over to the French Open, where Novak Djokovic has demolished Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets. He's reached the men's quarter-finals for the 17th time, which means he's now snatched the record from Rafael Nadal!
CLIFF DIVING WORLD SERIES
Finally, to Boston in the US, where the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has just started! Aussie Rhiannan Iffland took center stage in the women's comp. She's now sitting in first place, with fellow Aussie Xantheia Pennisi coming in third. Meanwhile, Romania's Constantin Popovici is sitting at the top of the Men's ladder. Woah, that's a long way down!
BTN 55 YEARS
Today is a special day because it's our 55th birthday! To celebrate, we've put together some fun facts about all things BTN! Here's 55 years in 55 seconds! BTN first went on air on the 5th of June 1968, but we weren't called Behind the News, we were called Current Affairs! A year later, the show was renamed, and BTN was born! Over the decades, we've had a heap of different looks and presenters, like Peter Sumner, Richard Morecroft, Tanya Nugent, Nathan Bazley, and of course, Amelia Moseley. We were the first ABC program to have a website, way back in the mid-'90s. In 2003, BTN was cancelled because of funding cuts made at the time, and a lot of people protested to bring us back, and in 2005, that's what happened! Cut to today, and we now have our daily show, Newsbreak which has been known by a lot of different names over the years. And of course BTN High which is the same BTN you know and love, but aimed at high school students. BTN's now the 3rd longest running TV show in the whole country behind Four Corners and Play School. And we hope to have many more years of bringing you the news!
